The Kaleidoscope Project at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine is a student-led initiative dedicated to supporting and uplifting the LGBTQ+ community and its allies. Rooted in the principles of diversity, inclusion, and advocacy, Kaleidoscope fosters a welcoming and affirming environment through education, community-building, and meaningful programming.

Our Mission

Kaleidoscope is committed to advocating for and supporting LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff at OUWB. Through initiatives, events, and educational resources, we aim to promote empowerment, advocacy, connection, and belonging, ensuring that all members of our community feel seen, supported, and valued.

Our Goals

We strive to:

  • Foster Inclusivity – Develop culturally relevant programs and workshops that strengthen belonging and provide essential resources on campus and beyond.
  • Create Brave Spaces – Offer safe and affirming environments where LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff can engage in open discussions about their experiences and well-being.
  • Promote Inclusive Healthcare – Equip current and future medical professionals with the knowledge and skills to provide affirming, competent care to LGBTQ+ patients.
  • Celebrate LGBTQ+ Identities – Recognize and uplift the LGBTQ+ community within all aspects of medical education.
  • Collaborate for Justice – Partner with campus and community organizations to foster a culture of equity and inclusion.
  • Lead with Visibility & Accountability – Establish a network of advocates committed to ongoing support and meaningful action.

Our Objectives

Through participation in Kaleidoscope, individuals will:

  • Explore Identity Development – Gain a deeper understanding of themselves, build self-confidence, and develop a sense of purpose.
  • Strengthen Community Bonds – Form meaningful connections within the LGBTQ+ and OUWB communities.
  • Build Lasting Relationships – Engage with peers, faculty, and staff to create a support network and access campus and community resources.
  • Embrace Diversity – Develop a greater awareness of personal identity, culture, and heritage while learning from others.

Programming & Events

We host a variety of events throughout the year, including educational programs, community-building activities, and opportunities for advocacy and celebration.

Annual Kaleidoscope Summit

Held each October in honor of LGBTQ+ History Month, this flagship event brings together OUWB students, faculty, and staff for education, empowerment, and networking. The summit features engaging discussions, expert speakers, and interactive sessions on LGBTQ+ issues in medical education and healthcare.

Ongoing Programs

Kaleidoscope offers at least 2-3 programs per semester, shaped by the needs and feedback of our participants. These include:

  • Med Soul Partnership – A mentorship program designed to connect LGBTQ+ students with experienced professionals for guidance and support.
  • Allyship Training – A deep-dive workshop for those looking to expand their knowledge, refine their advocacy skills, and become stronger allies to the LGBTQ+ community.
